Stable Antimicrobial Complex is the second non-antimicrobial technology developed by Prof O’Flaherty and Dr McCay. This is an innovative iodophor. While iodine has been utilised as an effective antimicrobial e.g. as Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) in surgical pre-operative scrubs, it is limited in its usage by its loss of efficacy in the presence of organic material e.g. blood, urine, milk. SAC provides for an iodophor, which retains efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms at extremely low concentrations both in the presence and absence of organic material.
